BEEHATCH CONTEST WINNERS

Update :: Corey
I love when I get to give stuff away. It's time to announce the winners of our contest in conjunction with Lens Records for the Beehatch Brood album, art cards, and pins. I want to thank everyone who entered. We weren't able to give everyone their requested prize, but free stuff is fun regardless. Hopefully the trivia was a fun diversion from the subtle horrors that mark your daily existence. If you're looking for another, get yourself a copy of Brood. Enough people requested the CD in this contest to prove to me that a great many are missing out on its myriad joys.

Before we get on to the winners, here at the answers to the contest questions as well as where you could have found them:::

1) Beehatch was originally a song title on Download's album, Furnace. Which member brought that song to the album sessions?

Answer: Phil Western. This was easily findable in the Litany Liner Notes for Furnace.

2) What was the title of Mark Spybey's first, cassette only release under the name Dead Voices on Air?

Answer: Abrader. Easily findable via Discogs.com or many other sites.

3) Brood includes a song called Which One's Pink?, a reference to a lyric by what band?

Answer: Pink Floyd. It's a lyric from Have a Cigar off of Wish You Were Here, easily findable with a Google.

4) What was the name of the record store where Phil Western met Dwayne Goettel?

Answer: Odyssey Imports. Again findable in my Litany Liner Notes for Furnace.

5) Beehatch are compiling a DVD of their performance in what city?

Answer: Bratislava. This proved to be a tricky one. Although I thought it was easily findable as mentioned on the band's Myspace, apparently they've been mentioning other shows elsewhere. So I decided not to count this one and no matter what people put for it I marked it as correct.

From the folks who answered correctly, the following winners were chosen randomly.

Beehatch Art Cards

Winners of the art card packs:::

Michael Tyma from IL
Adam Vavrick from IL
Stephen Shultz from CO
John Oravec from BC
Eyal Talmor from Israel

Beehatch Pin Sets

Winners of the pin sets:::

Larry Kerr from TX
Jamie Trant from CA
John Mazurek from IL
Bernd Martin from New Zealand
Keith Szafran from IL

Beehatch Brood

Winners of the Brood CD:::

Allen Williams from MO
Matthew Leo from UK
Dana Molnarova from Czech Republic
Justin Elliot from KS
Paul Street from TX

The prizes will be arriving soon from Lens. Thanks again to them for making this happen.

BEST WISHES TO SASHA

Update :: Corey
Normally I don't do this type of thing, but today Sasha, one of the members of the behind the scenes touring ensemble with Puppy and ohGr, is going in for some much needed back surgery to repair a work related injury. I had the opportunity to meet him briefly in New Orleans and Houston last month and discovered he's a gracious and lovely man. My best wishes go to him for a successful operation and quick recovery so that he can get back out there mixing up stage blood to splatter all over us.

JAPAN SPACE, OLD REVIEWS, AND REPO

Update :: Corey
Following the success of cEvin's recent DJ gig in Tokyo, Skinny Puppy has opened a Myspace for their fans in Japan. I know there's a bunch of you out there who read Litany because I see the hits we get form Japanese domains. So this post is for you guys! I have no idea what this says:::

Skinny Puppy Japan Myspace click to zoom

Go to myspace.com/skinnypuppyjapan to connect with other fans in your part of the world. And if you want to see a clip of Key's DJ gig, look here.

In other news, thinking about Phil Western's Treatment 2CD best of retrospective reminded me that I've reviewed a lot of his albums over the years. Despite the fact that some of these ancient things are embarrassingly poorly written and make me want to slice off my own fingers so that they can never type such transgressions against the English language again, I've decided to post most of my old album reviews in our Exclusive Features section for those who are still on the fence about Treatment. Take a look at what I had to see about Dark Features, Worlds End, and 4am and remember that the two Kone albums Phil put out last year were some of the best things to happen to my ears in 2008. All of these amazing records are represented on Treatment.

Finally, the Repo road tour is making its way around. I'll be traveling to the Maryland showing tomorrow. So if you're heading there, please say hello to this guy. If you're not anywhere near the showings, fear not, because the film is hitting DVD and Bluray on January 20th,.

NEW PHIL WESTERN 2CD COMPILATION

Update :: Corey
Phil Western, member of Download and PlatEAU, is about the release a career-spanning compilation of the best of his solo work. For those of you who have been lax in investigating his music outside of Download, Treatment is the perfect primer, a gateway into some truly fantastic music. It covers his earliest, sought after solo releases like The Escapist and Dark Features up through his most recent work under the Kone identity, which unequivocally represents some of the best music of 2008. It also includes some exclusive and rare, previously vinyl-only material. Here's what Phil has to say about it:::

DISC ONE

There is one exclusive track, and you might find some little nuggets hidden between the songs a la DAT HELL. There have not been too many preorders, but I hope some of you will come around!! As previously groveled, your support is essential to the survival of this fledgeling little label!

You may order your cds now! 22 dollars plus 3 for shipping, 5 if overseas (slightly more due to added weight from double cd)

If it completely bombs, and is not possible to do the manufacturing, full refunds will be issued. If all goes well, expect mailouts in the late January time frame.

If you like Download and don't have any of Phil's solo work, you are doing yourself a colossal disservice. Treatment is the perfect remedy. Order from his website or just Paypal funds to musicatdhsound@gmail.com.

Also, don't forget to enter the Beehatch contest below. You can win free stuff! It's easy! So far the entries have been light, so you have a very good chance at winning.

NEW YEAR = FREE STUFF

Update :: Corey
Happy new year to all of you out there in Litany land. However your 2008 was, I hope your 2009 is better. We should have a lot of good music heading our way this year and some cool things are going to be happening with Litany that I'm pretty excited about.

I also want to remind people that the Litany donations to charity (see the last post) will be open until January 10th. So, if you can, please give. I would personally appreciate it. The causes are worthy. Think of it as a way of giving something back in exchange for whatever this site has given you.

We're kicking things off in 2009 with a contest. It's been a long time since I've gotten to give anything away but this past year we've been given a lot of great music to celebrate. The folks at Lens Records, responsible for bringing us Mark Spybey and Phil Western's collaboration Beehatch, are allowing us to give away a whole bunch of Beehatch related stuff to you, the Litany reader.

Beehatch's fantastic new album Brood is accompanied with a line of quality merchandise, including a series of art cards with art by Mark Spybey and Mark Nugent (who some may recall as the live film man on the Download tour) and set of pins. The album itself includes a few of the art cards or you purchase the complete set independently. Also available are a beanie cap and t-shirt, both of which kept me warm on my ventures around the continent following the ohGr tour (see the forum for photos of these modeled by your intrepid webmaster). In an era when some people want music to go exclusively digital, it's wonderful to see a label put such love and care into the packaging and accoutrements that many of us still like to fondle and gaze into while listening.

We are offering five (5) prizes each of the Brood CD, art card set, and pin set for a total of fifteen (15) winners.

The rules are simple. We have FIVE trivia questions. All answers should be findable online, in many cases by poking around this site and those linked from it. Five winners for each prize will be chosen from the correct entries.

Send an email to the address litany@darkstatic.com with the subject "Brood Contest" and the following information:

Your full name and mailing address for receipt of the prizes
Your preferred prize (CD, art cards, or pins)
Your trivia answers

The deadline for entries is January 21st.

By entering you are agreeing to allow Lens records to add you to their email mailing list for announcements about future releases. Entering this contest guarantees you nothing but momentary unbridled entertainment. All decisions are final. We reserve the right to change and make up our own rules at any time. One entry per person. Only send entries to litany@darkstatic.com.

The questions:

1) Beehatch was originally a song title on Download's album, Furnace. Which member brought that song to the album sessions?

2) What was the title of Mark Spybey's first, cassette only release under the name Dead Voices on Air?

3) Brood includes a song called Which One's Pink?, a reference to a lyric by what band?

4) What was the name of the record store where Phil Western met Dwayne Goettel?

5) Beehatch are compiling a DVD of their performance in what city?
